Notable Characters in SWTOR

Much like any MMORPG, there are certain non-playable characters (NPCs) with which players in SWTOR will be able to interact with to advance the storyline. Given that BioWare has stated that storyline will be a major focus in SWTOR, I think it is safe to say that these NPCs will play a major role in the game.

Right now, there are 6 announced NPCs – two for each faction and two neutral NPCs. I think the presence of neutral, featured NPCs just goes to show that a lot of gameplay, particularly end-game, is likely to be centered around neutral missions given by NPCs in places like Nar Shaddaa.

These are just a few of the dozens of characters you will find in SWTOR. Each time you find an important NPC, you will get a codex entry on that character. NPCs that do not have their own Codex entry tend not to be very important to the central storyline.

Galactic Republic NPCs

  • Supreme Chancellor Janarus – Supreme Chancellor Janarus is essentially the president or prime minister of the Galactic Republic. As such, he is one of the most powerful NPCs in game – not so much in terms of physical strength but overall influence. Players can expect to interact later in the storyline in order to increase the seriousness and epicness of missions.
  • Diab Duin – Diab Duin is the Senator representing Aeten II, a planet rich in crystals used for lightsabers and starships. It is interesting that a seemingly insignificant NPC like this was highlighted on the official SWTOR official site. Given his promotion, I think it is safe to say that Galactic Republic players will be engaged in a variety of missions on this planet.

Neutral NPCs

  • Mako – Mako is billed as a computer-savvy bounty hunter. She has also recently been added to the companions section of the official SWTOR site. In other words, she will be a companion for one of the races.
  • Jewl’a Nightbringer – Jewl’a is the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy. It is likely at some point that players (perhaps Bounty Hunter only) will be given a mission to take her out to culminate a certain storyline or offer up big rewards. Perhaps she will be a companion class, but it would feel a bit weird for the “most fearsome bounty hunter in the galaxy” to be your flunkie, even as a Bounty Hunter.

Sith Empire NPCs

  • Keeper – The Keeper (name hidden) is the direct overseer of the Imperial’s espionage program. He is likely to be the go-to NPC for all Imperial Agents as that class is the main “spy” of the Empire.
  • Darth Jadus – Darth Jadus is one of the ruling Sith on the council but his intentions are kept hidden from the rest of the group. He also is highly involved in espionage and maintains control over the largest espionage organization. He also only uses non-Sith spies for his intelligence operations.

SWTOR Notable NPCs Conclusion

While this bit of lore provides interesting, we will have to wait for release to really see how the storyline will play out. One of the most telling things though about the NPCs is the focus on the prominence of the Imperial Agent. I think this is a good thing as it will be easy for the Imperial Agent to slip between the proverbial cracks given that the Empire has three other highly attractive classes which cover all styles of play.
