SWTOR Jedi Consular Guide
In this SWTOR Jedi Consular guide, I will be discussing everything we know about this class, what its potential roles are, and what kind of player this class would suit.
About the Jedi Consular
In Star Wars: The Old Republic, the Jedi Consular is one of two force-wielding classes available to players who side with the Republic.
Unlike the Jedi Knight, the Jedi Consular is that it is able to fill every role in the game through its advanced classes.
Advanced Roles
The Jedi Consular can progress into one of two advanced classes: The Jedi Shadow and the Jedi Sage. It has yet to be determined whether players will be able to switch their advanced classes, so choose wisely based off which roles you think you would like to play.
Jedi Shadow: The Jedi Shadow is a melee damage-dealer and tank. This class uses force abilities to reduce damage. This class can also use stealth, allowing it to sneak past enemies and sneak up on other players in PvP.
Essentially, the Jedi Shadow is for players who want to play a melee/force-wielding hybrid class that is capable of tanking or dealing damage. Strangely enough, this is the same role as the Guardian specialization of the Jedi Knight. I suspect that the Guardian will overall be the “better” tank, but the Jedi Shadow will offer more versatility (i.e. more Force-related abilities). It may also get some self-healing powers from the joint Jedi Consular tree, making it a potentially powerful solo class.
The melee-damage dealing branch for the Jedi Shadow (Infiltration) seems to have elements of the Rogue and Thief classes from other MMORPGs. They have assassination-oriented talents which do things like offer them armor-piercing attacks and give them bonus force (energy) regeneration for a few seconds after leaving stealth, allowing them to front-load more damage.
Jedi Sage: The Jedi Sage is the caster specialization of the Jedi Consular and the only real caster available for play on the side of the Old Republic. It can be both a healer or a casting damage-dealer, using force-based long-range attacks to deal damage.
Thoughts on the Jedi Consular
I suspect that if you pick a Jedi Sage, most group-mates will expect you to heal. While Troopers and Smugglers can heal, I suspect Jedi Sages who want to deal damage will be treated with the same lack of reverence of say, a Moonkin in WoW (i.e. mostly not welcome by group-mates).
The Jedi Shadow is an interesting class, with the ability to deal damage and tank. The melee specialization also gives it access to stealth, which is very convenient for PvP.
If you are very interested in PvP, I am not sure how good of a choice the Jedi Shadow is going to be. So far, healers are by far the most limited class in SWTOR, so it is going to be tough to get a group as a non-healing Jedi Consular. The Jedi Sentinel (Jedi Knight specialization) for example can only deal melee damage. If somehow the Jedi Shadow was better than the Sentinel at doing melee damage, no one would take Jedi Sentinels to their groups. There has to be some semblance of balance to the game or many players will find themselves left out in the dark.
My recommendation is now only pick the Jedi Shadow if you want tank or solo (probably a great solo class given its self-healing, damage, and tanking powers) and to pick a the Jedi Sage if you want to heal and have a damage off-spec for farming and PvP.
