SWTOR Starships Guide

The SWTOR starships feature is ons of the most intriguing aspects of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Players will be able to purchase Starships which they can then use in the game.

The most fascinating thing about Starships is that these are not just means for travel. Instead, the Starship is your home-base. Every player can get their own Starship which they can “zone into” much like it was a building.

Inside their starship, players can walk around and plan their next move. Their crew can also be found in the Starship and you can give commands to them while you are in there. Note: your crew performs tasks such as crafting, and you can command them to do some sort of task from your starship and they will then work on that task in real-time. Very neat stuff.

There are six announced ships. Each ship has different capacities and costs. Players will start out with common models and be able to upgrade as they get more money or complete various tasks in the game. The official SWTOR site also hints that there are some secret models which are only available on the black market.

Additionally, certain ships have certain features. Some are built for fighting whereas others are built for speed and running supplies. I have not seen any gameplay videos yet for space combat so we will have to wait and see how this places out.

With that said, here is the SWTOR Starship list:

  • DS-Mantis – Rumored to be a very expensive and rare ship. This ship is built for fighting and of the announced ships it is the best fighter. The only affiliation of this ship is that of money; both factions can get it as long as they can afford it.
  • Fury – The Fury is a balanced ship which combines fighting power and speed. It is a Sith ship and fairly expensive.
  • BT-7 Thunderclap – This is the Galactic Republic’s most advanced fighter. It is not quite as powerful as the DS-Mantis but is much more affordable.
  • X-708 Phantom – This ship looks much like a stealth bomber and is known for being hard to detect. It is an imperial ship but may only be used for missions or may be reserved for Imperial Agents.
  • X5 Freighter – This is supposed to be one of the fastest ships and largest ships available for play. Perhaps the size of the ship allows for an increased cargo size and may be relevant to the Smuggler’s interests.
  • Defender – This is a Galactic Republic ship and the favorite of Jedi. This ship is fairly balanced and is the Republic’s corollary to the Sith Empire’s Fury.

SWTOR Ships Conclusion

While not much information is available regarding the actual gameplay of ships, we do know the following things:

- The DS-Mantis is the best announced ship in the game and is prohibitively expensive. It is a neutral vessel and both factions can own it.

- The XS Freighter has the most cargo size of any ship and is also neutral. Cargo size can be used to store items (like a bank in other games).

- The Fury (Sith Empire) and Defender (Galactic Republic) are balanced ships, both with moderate cargos, firepower, and speed

- The BT-7 Thunderclap (Galactic Republic) and X-708 Phantom (Imperial Agent) specialize in offense and scouting respectively.
